Delivery times update
bodhrán-info is in full operation despite the difficulties the current pandemic brings. Delivery might be a bit slower, but still works for most countries. However, we are told by DHL that we are not able to deliver to some countries at the moment. Since the situation is very dynamic, please check here for the latest updates from DHL.
Brexit
Dear customers in the UK, please note: Due to the new tax regulations in the UK after brexit the minimum order price for orders to the UK is 150€. If you want to understand why, please follow this link. All orders above 150€ are shipped without German VAT, so the price marked as "netto" is the relevant price for UK orders.
Orders to Northern Ireland are not affected, please use Northern Ireland as your country at checkout. Do not use UK!

Bands & Projects

Cara

The most successful project was Cara. Founded in 2003 with Claus Steinort (flute), Gudrun Walther (fiddle & vocals), Sandra Steinort (flute, piano and vocals) and Jürgen Treyz (guitars) the line up changed a bit since then: In 2010 Ryan Murphy (pipes and flutes) and Jeana Leslie (piano, fiddle, vocals) replaced Claus and Sandra, who left Cara due to family reasons. After Jeana decided to become a teacher, Kim Edgar from Edinburgh replaced her in 2013 and since Ryan got more and more busy with his other band Manrán, Hendrik Morgenbrodt joined Cara in 2014. We have been touring all over Germany and Europe, incl. Ireland and the UK. We have also played in  the US, where we appeared at huge festivals like Milwaukkee, ICONS in Boston, Chicago Celtic Fest and Kansas City Irish Fest. Also, we have produced 5 CDs and a live DVD/CD combo. Here are a few recent videos, more videos are in the video section:

Bodhran Insight

Together with my dear colleague at the BodhranWeekends, Guido Plüschke, I produced a CD called BodhranInsight. We are not only showing a retrospect of previous recordings, but also produced some tracks especially for this album, including a bodhrán duet, a multitrack recording of the two of us. It's available in the shop.

Collaboration with Christian Hedwitschak

LogohedI collaborate a lot with bodhrán maker Christian Hedwitschak. The main result is the Signature Line RWE Bodhrán. The design of this drum influenced many other drums in the bodhrán world, even outside Christian's workshop. I was also involved in the development of the LightLine and BasicLine series and the new CoreLine series. This has led to bodhrán-info being one of the two Hedwitschak Premium Partners.

Guest musician

Ove the years, I had the pleasure of working as a guest musician in a few projects.

Olaf Sickmann

I recorded on two projects of Tin Whistle and guitar player Olaf Sickman (yes, I know, but that's his name ! :-)). Olaf is not only a respected musician, but also a great tune smith. The two CDs are available in the shop.

Johannes Schiefner - Watergrasshill

A great CD by one of Germany's leading Uilleann Piper. It was a great honour for me to be asked to be part of this CD. Here is the link to Johannes' myspace.

Blue

In 2006 I had the chance to record with three friends: Colman Connolly; low whistle, uilleann pipes, flute und whistles, Tobi Kurig; bouzouki, Franziska Urton; fiddle. The Album "Blue" turned out to be a great recording and it was a great pleasure to be part of it!

Previous projects.

A short look into history:

Steampacket

In December 1999 Stefan Schneider (fiddle), Claus Steinort (flute), Andreas Lassak (guitar) and I founded the band "Steampacket". We have since added Tina Fastje (fiddle) and replaced Andreas with Tobi Kurig. Although we play mainly irish music, the occasional Breton, Scottish and even Finnish piece makes it into the repertoire: "Traditional Irish Music - And Beyond." The CD is available in the shop. Here is a review at Irishmusicreview.com.

DeReelium

DeReelium formed in 1996 and we recorded our first CD in 1999. DeReelium is based in Hannover and we host the regular session every Sunday at the Irish Harp, plus Sessions at the Kuriosum in Hannover and the Irish Pub at Brüderstraße.

Many other bands and musicians, including More Maids, An Tor, Navan and Ian Smith and Stephen Campbell have invited me to play with them, either live or on a recording. It was always a pleasure!

Workshops

I started teaching in 1996 and met many nice, interesting people through my lessons and workshops. I teach workshop weekends all over Germany and the neighbouring countries. Twice a year Guido Plüschke and I offer the BodhranWeekends. A highlight for the last several years was the invitation to teach at the renowned BodhranSummerschool "Craiceann" on Inis Oirr, the smallest of the Aran Islands in Ireland.

About me

Rolf

Let's start from the beginning: I was born in 1971 in Jülich, a small town in the Rhineland area. In my other life I am a vet working at the University for Veterinary Medicine. I live in an an old school building near Hannover, together with my wife Karola Wagels and our daughter Frieda

I started to play in 1992. My first one was a cheap one made for tourists, including a picture of a harp and shamrock. As soon as I got serious, I changed to proper makers and better instruments. Learning the instrument was not easy, as there were no workshops like you find them today.

The session in Hannover was of great help in the beginning, esp. Klaus Gehrmann. Going to Ireland and meeting musicians also helped a lot. I received plenty of support from other musicians, along with the occasional remark like "A Gentleman is a man who owns a bodhran but doesn't play it". I had the pleasure to learn from people like Stephen Campbell and Ian Smith in Donegal and my friend Eamon Jordan, who took me to my first session In Ireland. When I asked  "Will I bring the drum ?" he just looked at me and said: "Of course!!".

A lot of things have developed since these days. In Hannover I joined DeReelium, then was asked by the German uilleann pipes society if I could do workshops for them. At the tionols I met other musicians and Steampacket and Cara were formed. Cara is taking me all over Europe now, and even to the US. Together with Guido Plüschke I developed the BodhránWeekends and I teach regularly at other workshops. In the last years (since 2005) I had the great honour to teach at the renowned Bodhrán Summerschool Craiceann on Inis Oírr.

People say my style is mixture of traditional pulse orientated playing and the more extroverted top end style. This is something I like. Many other players have influenced me, among them Brian Morrissey from Nenagh, John Joe Kelly of Flook, Frank Torpey, Mel Mercier, Jimmy Higgins, Tommy Hayes, Junior Davey, and Eamon Murray.
Two players will always be special and inspirational: Seamus O'Kane und Johnny McDonagh. I learned a lot about the pulse from both of them and they showed me what's really important in bodhrán playing.

I would like to thank all the players and musicians I had the honour to play with and who enriched my life with their music.
