I had the pleasure to be involved in Olaf Sickmann's latest project "Whistle Man".
The eighth solo CD of composer, guitarist and tin whistle player Olaf Sickmann is a real treat. Supported by a former member and a current member of the internationally acclaimed band Cara he recorded the album Whistle Man, which is a true gem. Olaf´s dreamy, flowing compositions are enriched by Rolf Wagels, one of the best bodhrán players in continental Europe, and Claus Steinort, a master on the Irish flute. Whistle Man is a lively and varied tin whistle CD, inspired mainly by Irish traditional music. Crisp bodhrán playing meets tin whistle virtuosity, and the simple but energetic guitar backing provides a carpet on which the music unfolds. It is a rare balance of perfect playing technique, emotion and wonderful, catchy compositions that makes the leitmotif of Whistle Man. The booklet, providing background information and stories, add a great personal touch to the album.
"There is a rich quality to Olaf’s music with new compositions that really deserve a little bit more attention and airplay. He has in his corner the outstanding talents of Rolf Wagels, of German group Cara on bodhrán bringing some marvelously crisp and clear accompaniment to 15 self-penned tracks."
